TravPrice starts from Japanese product rankings and compares listed prices between Japan and the United States.

How weekly notes and features are made

The TravPrice desk collates public rankings and brand or retailer quotes, with AI helping to draft and calculate, and turns shopping questions into price tables, comparisons and buying notes. These are not first-hand reviews; unboxings, lab tests or store visits we have not done are never written as this site’s experience.

Each piece separates published, updated and price-check dates, and lists the matched spec, sources and FX. A weekly note is that issue’s selection, not a live weekly ticker or an automatic edition; a headline gap must be checkable against the comparison terms and data dates in the piece.

Sources in this edition

It also records 389 platform lists and author picks, 3924 source rows in total. Each row keeps the original source, period and rank; Don Quijote categories do not publish ranks, so they are marked as picks and never given invented places. There are also 10 in-house tech watchlists (370 models), each model listed once and ordered by the US–Japan gap, with no source rank attached.

The catalogue currently holds 1168 sourced products, from brand and retailer pages, with the source URL, model, price kind and observation date. Prices are dated public list-price snapshots; there is no authorised live merchant feed yet. This is not a complete market quote, and it does not promise live stock.

Product pages distinguish official list prices, promotions and catalogue stickers. Pre-order prices can be read in the analysis but do not enter existing product gap rankings; sold-out sources also stay out of in-stock rankings. Re-check the source before every purchase.

POS, store bestsellers and traveller picks

POS sales reflect the sample channels a data vendor covers; a retailer list only represents that chain and site. Reviews, product tests, editor picks and Taiwan travel notes are labelled separately, and a recommendation order is never converted into a sales rank. Platform popularity is not a claim about how well a product works.

Each source records its public scope, update cycle and what can be retrieved; login- or paywalled lists keep their entry points and are never padded with products. No composite score is produced without complete sales, test, gap and packing data.See the full source directory ↗

How the rankings are ordered

The amount ranking sorts by “home list price − Japan tax-free converted”, largest first; the percent ranking uses the home list price as the denominator. The home-cheaper ranking leads with the largest home-side advantage. Search, category and home-market choices change the coverage; a place is only that current list, not Japan-wide sales.

Cross-list finds rotate through each source’s pick order and never merge scores from different platforms. Sorted cards still keep the source’s original rank; “paired” and gap sorts only include rows whose match and list prices are consistent.

The Don Quijote source is the official cross-border shop; the yen figure is not a Japan store price, and the tax basis is unstated. Sources from different dates cannot be read as the same-day low.

Same model and same spec

Items must match on model, capacity, colour and main pack contents. The same brand or series is not enough to auto-pair. Cross-border SKUs, warranty, language, software or rated voltage differences need a line-by-line note; a match that cannot confirm the main spec does not publish a gap. Unknown consumable counts stay as notes and never claim that every pack detail is identical.

A gap is not your landed cost

Japan tax-free = Japan tax-included list ÷ (1 + consumption-tax rate)
Japan converted = Japan tax-free × reference FX
Japan gap = home list price − Japan converted
Gap percent = Japan gap ÷ home list price × 100%

The Japan price on cards and rankings is the tax-free figure, i.e. the pre-tax price after a refund: when the source states tax-included, consumption tax (usually 10%, food and drink 8%) is taken off and rounded to the yen; a pre-tax source is used as listed; a source that never stated its basis is shown as listed and labelled “Japan price”, with no tax-free estimate. Product pages list both tax-included and tax-free figures, and the gap on each basis.

Japan and the US are compared on source list prices; each row may be tax-included, pre-tax or unstated, and an unknown basis is never assumed included. US stickers exclude state and local sales tax, so the tax basis differs from Japan’s included prices; that is a sticker comparison, not a same-basis landed cost. FX is the Bank of Taiwan’s dated reference board; JPY/USD is crossed from yen and dollar spot selling rates, not a tradable FX or card quote.

Card fees, shipping, luggage and duties that were not obtained are never treated as zero. The 1.5% card fee in articles is a sensitivity case. A tax-free price is an estimate and needs traveller eligibility (same shop, same day, pre-tax from ¥5,000); from 1 Nov 2026 the flow becomes pay tax-included then refund at departure, and the refund handling fee is not included; article body copy still compares tax-included stickers and notes that refunds are excluded. How articles are generated

After price observations, spec notes and product-specific editor notes pass data checks, the build generates the matching market’s gap article, price table, card-fee cases and break-even FX. The homepage and articles share the same price data so the figures do not diverge; rebuilding does not present old data as checked today, and it is not a fresh price scrape.

The copy is written to finish a buying decision. This site does not claim hands-on tests, product labs or professional certification, and it does not promise search rankings. A single-week list only marks that week’s observation and is never used to infer a full-year sales volume.

Product images and editorial pictures

Product images on this site are always AI redraws of the item’s look, not official photos, and cannot be evidence of packaging, colourway or spec; items not yet redrawn show no picture. Names, marks and appearance belong to their rights holders; this site does not reproduce or hotlink brand or shop product photos. Street and editorial scenes are also AI-generated and are not store photography. There is currently no advertising, affiliate commission or paid ranking.
